Printed Festival Cups: Choosing Your Print Method
Printed festival cups come off our line by one of two processes, and the choice drives cost, minimum order and how the cup looks after fifty washes. Both are done in-house in Stockton-on-Tees. Neither is the 'better' one in the abstract; they answer different briefs.
Single colour screen print lays one ink directly onto the moulded cup. It is the cheapest route per unit, has the lowest minimum, and turns around fastest. It suits crests, wordmarks, a bar name, a deposit instruction, or a sponsor logo that is already one colour. Its limit is exactly what the name says: one ink. Gradients, photographs and multi-colour lock-ups are not available to it, and fine reversed-out detail can fill in.
Full colour in-mould labelling works the other way round. A printed film is placed in the mould and the molten polypropylene forms around it, so the artwork ends up inside the cup wall rather than on it. Printed festival cups made this way reproduce photographs and gradients properly and cannot fade, peel or scuff, because there is nothing on the surface to damage. There is no per-colour upcharge, so a four-colour design costs the same to run as a one-colour design. The trade-off is a higher entry point and a slightly longer lead time.
A rough rule: under a few thousand cups with a simple mark, screen print. Anything with photography, sponsor artwork or a multi-year life, IML. If you are genuinely unsure, send the artwork and the quantity and we will tell you which we would run, including when the cheaper option is the right one. Screen print puts one ink on the outside of the cup. IML fuses a printed film into the cup wall during moulding. Screen print is cheaper per unit with a lower minimum; IML gives full colour, photographic reproduction and a print that cannot scuff or fade.
One with screen print. Unlimited with full colour IML, at no per-colour upcharge, so a photographic design costs the same to run as a single-colour one.
50 cups on screen print. Full colour IML carries a higher entry point because of the film setup. Send your quantity and artwork and we will quote both so you can see the crossover.
10 working days from artwork sign-off on the standard tier, 25 on Eco Saver at the lowest unit price, or 48-72 hours on express. IML adds a little at the front for film production.
IML will, indefinitely, because the artwork is inside the cup wall. Screen print is durable but sits on the surface, so it will show wear eventually across hundreds of cycles.
Yes, on both processes. Send the reference and we will match it and show you on the digital proof before production. Translucent polypropylene shifts some colours slightly, and we will tell you where that happens.
Every pint and half pint is UKCA marked for Great Britain and CE marked for the EU, at the legal fill line. The mark is moulded in, not printed, so it is unaffected by either print process.
You get a free digital proof on every order as standard. Physical samples of existing stock are available on request; a physical sample of your own artwork means running the job, so that is quoted separately.
