Branded Cups Against Promotional Merch: What Actually Works
Branded cups outperform most promotional giveaways because they get used repeatedly, in public, in relaxed social settings. The Advertising Specialty Institute's 2026 Ad Impressions Study puts promotional drinkware at around 1,300 lifetime brand impressions, kept for at least a year, with 87% of recipients keeping it because it is useful. A reusable event cup applies that same logic at event scale.

At a glance
- About 1,300 lifetime brand impressions per drinkware item (ASI)
- 87% of recipients keep branded drinkware because it is useful
- Over three quarters would use it at least once a week
- A cup is used in public, in hand, for hours at a time
- Full colour IML branding does not peel or fade with washing
- Minimum order 50 cups, so small activations are viable
Promotional merch lives or dies on one thing: does it get used, or does it go in a drawer? Here is the honest comparison. For the product itself, see the complete buying guide.
What the published research says
These are published industry findings, not our own numbers. They come from the Advertising Specialty Institute's 2026 Ad Impressions Study, which has measured promotional product effectiveness for more than fifteen years.
- Impressions. A promotional drinkware item generates average estimated lifetime brand impressions of about 1,300, one of the highest counts of any non wearable product category.
- Retention. Recipients say they would keep a branded drinkware item for at least a year.
- Frequency of use. More than three quarters of respondents said they would use a promotional drinkware piece at least once a week.
- Usefulness. 87% of end users say they would keep a branded drinkware item because it is useful, and usefulness is exactly what keeps a product in circulation generating impressions.

The comparison, honestly
This is a directional comparison based on how each item is used, not a table of invented percentages.
| Behaviour | Pens | Tote bags | Branded event cups |
|---|---|---|---|
| Used in public | Rarely | Sometimes | Yes, constantly |
| Kept and reused | Low | Medium | High, 87% keep drinkware for usefulness (ASI) |
| Visible during use | No | Occasionally | Yes, in hand at the bar |
| Doubles as a keepsake | No | Sometimes | Yes |
| Branding survives washing | Not applicable | Fades | Yes, IML is fused into the cup wall |
Why cups win at events specifically
Context matters. A cup is used at exactly the moment people are social, photographed and relaxed, so the branding rides along all evening and goes home afterwards. A pen is used alone at a desk, if at all. That is the real edge: not a magic multiplier, but repeated, visible, in context use.
The durability point matters too. Because full colour IML fuses the artwork into the cup wall during moulding rather than printing onto the surface, the branding lasts as long as the cup does. Our cups are validated for commercial wash cycles and stay durable for 200 or more reuses, so a cup that goes home keeps working for a long time.
When merch still makes sense
Pens and totes are cheap bulk fillers and have their place for mass handouts. If your goal is a memorable, reused, in context brand impression at an event, a branded cup does more work per pound. For the numbers behind that, see the pricing and MOQ guide. For how they are deployed, see the events and weddings guide.
